Delayed clearance of import cargoes is costing the importers substantial amount of money in additional demurrage and detention charges and is thus pushing the landed costs to unaffordable levels, he said. The delayed clearance costs importers as much as $ 80 a day in container detention charges while demurrage charges cost them as much as Rs 4,000 per day. The demurrage and detention charges push to extended number of days because shipping companies observe Saturdays and Sundays as weekly holidays, he added.
