Kenya Ports Authority sets aims at Lamu Port after Mombasa Port success

KENYA: The Port of Mombasa has recently completed million containers on its deck, the Kenyan Port Authority has now reaffirmed about the second port Lamu port that it will aim at improving efficiency and empower growth in the area, however its not in competition with Mombasa yet but the aims have been set up.

Eng Kamau who was flanked by his principal secretary Nduva Muli said the government has plans to improve Lamu’s economy, obstacles would be resolved by his ministry and the treasury.

The Cabinet Secretary said the government has introduced weighing of cargo vehicles while moving along the highway instead of stopping at weigh bridges across the country.

Mombasa Governor Hassan Ali Joho urged the national government to collaborate with the county government to introduce trans-shipment business at the port of Mombasa.

He said the trans-shipment business is expected to improve on twenty-foot equivalent unit ([TEU’s) annually to the required standard.

“Come this year the twenty-foot equivalent unit expects to surpass one million containers.” he disclosed.

Dock Workers Union (DWU) Secretary General Simon Sang urged Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) to embrace the performance contract to the employees to enable them evaluate both the work force output and input.

He said the DWU has been pushing for the commencement of the performance contract since last year and described it as overdue for the last five years.
