The Kenya Ports Authority ( KPA) has shortlisted 12 firms to run the second container terminal at the Mombasa Port. In a gazette notice dated April 10, 2015, the 12 names consisting of regional and international bidders will submit proposals to manage the Sh27 billion facility.
KPA had earlier this year received 19 bids after a call for applications for a concessionaire to manage the facility. Some of the shortlisted companies include Chinese based China Merchant Holdings, Netherlands-based APM Terminals BV and Dubai-based DP World Ltd. Some companies submitted joint bids between regional and local firms.
They include multinational giants such as Cosco Pacific Ltd. Bollore Logistics, Toyota and Kamigumi Company Ltd bid as a consortia as well as Grup Maritim TCB, S.L, Mitsubishi Corporation and Freight Forwarders Kenya. KPA says the ongoing construction of the second container terminal will up volumes at the port, and is upbeat that expansion works are ahead of schedule.
The Government expects completion by November this year rather than the March 2016 deadline. The appointed concessionaire will operate 51 per cent of berths 20 and 21 with local investors taking up the remaining 49 per cent.
