NAIROBI: Kenya’s Safaricom reported on Thursday that its earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) in the six months to September rose 16 percent to 38.8 billion shillings ($381.14 million).
The East African nation’s biggest telecoms operator, which is 40 percent owned by Britain’s Vodafone, also said the number of subscribers rose 15 percent on year to 25.1 million. Total revenue rose 25 percent to 97.22 billion shillings, Chief Executive Officer Bob Collymore told an investor briefing.
Revenue from calls, which accounts for close to half of the total, grew 3.5 percent in the period to 45.19 billion shillings. Revenue from its mobile phone-based financial service, known as M-Pesa, rose 24 percent to 19.35 billion shillings.
