SYDNEY: Koenigsegg has unveiled latest hyper car with the covers coming off the new Regera model in Geneva.

The Regera is powered by the Swedish carmaker’s first hybrid power plant, combining a V8 petrol engine with a trio of electric motors. Both front and rear axles get one electric motor each, while the third is matched up with the engine.

Engine output alone is 809kW, while the electric motors add 520kW. Put it all together, and the combined available power output is a colossal 1329kW, while torque peaks at an equally impressive 2100Nm.

The 0-100km/h sprint is over in 2.8 seconds, but the acceleration party continues all the way up to 400km/h  which takes less than 20 seconds.

Koenigsegg says the Regera is the most powerful production car in existence; with power outputs that leave the likes of Ferrari’s La Ferrari, the McLaren P1 and Porsche 918 well behind.

The Regera even packs some green credentials, with the electric motors capable of up to 32km of battery-powered zero emission driving before the petrol engine is called upon.

Surprisingly, all of that power reaches the road through a CVT automatic transmission, of sorts. Koenigsegg calls it the Direct Drive (KDD), and says it reduces power loss by around 50 percent compared to conventional CVTs.

A very necessary carbon ceramic brake package is standard, nestled behind the 19-inch wheels at the front and 20-inch wheels at the rear all carbon fibre.

The large rear wing is a standout on the exterior, which contributes a combined 450kg of down force. Prices start at AU$2.4 million plus tax, plus on-road costs.
