MEXICO: Foot-long lamprey eels are falling off the sky in and around Fairbanks, Alaska, prompting several phone calls to the Alaska Department of Fish and Wildlife. The creepy, toothed eel-like fish, is ending up on sidewalks and people’s lawns.
Lampreys are about 15 inches in length and born along muddy riverbanks, where they live for several years, before travelling to the ocean and return to fresh water to spawn.
They are not sold locally nor are found in nearby river. They use their five rows of sharp teeth to latch onto other fish by piercing through their scales before using their tongue to suck up their blood and fluids.
According to the department, ‘Vampire Fish’ reproduces in the Chena River and live underwater in mud for several years.
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game has a ready explanation for the lampreys ending up on sidewalks and people’s lawns. The officials said that the fish is being dropped from the sky by seagulls.
