COLOMBO: Sri Lanka Customs has confiscated 16,000 litres of illegally imported ethanol (alcohol) from the Customs clearance centre in the city.
The contraband was imported hidden in a container claimed to contain palm oil. The container included 80 barrels of ethanol. It was addressed to a registered company.
Police arrested two persons regarding the smuggling. Customs media spokesman Lesley Gamini said that the import might have cost Rs 10 million loss to the government.
The Customs seized illegally imported ethanol several times in the recent past. Politicians’ names were also mentioned with them but the investigations did not lead to find any connection with the illegal imports.
