Latvian, Russian officials agree on improvement of cargo flow across border

MOSCOW: The Latvian-Russian border control checkpoints Vientuli (Latvia) and Ludonka (Russia) should be opened for the cargo transport vehicle flow, the state officials of both countries agreed, LETA learned.

The officials customs services of both countries agreed to turn to the Latvian and Russian Transport Ministries to promote upgrading of the border transport infrastructure. The Latvian and Russian customs services officials agreed to continue implementation of the necessary measures to foster speedy and safe border crossing.

Vientuli checkpoint on the Latvian-Russian border reopened on Thursday after renovation carried out with support from the Estonia-Latvia-Russia cross-border cooperation program, the Latvian Ministry for Environment Protection and Regional Development said earlier.

The agreement on renovation of the Latvian-Russian border checkpoint was signed in December 2012. Total investment in renovation of the checkpoint on the Latvian side of the border was EUR 13.46 million, of which EUR 7.09 million came from the Latvian national budget and EUR 6.37 million was the EU financing from the European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument (ENPI).
