LAHORE: Lahore Chamber of Commerce & Industry (LCCI) President Ijaz A Mumtaz has said that Pakistan facing severe water shortage and water scarcity is intensifying here with every passing day.
While talking to a group of leading businessmen, the LCCI president said that this is the right time to evolve a new strategy to exploit hydel resources. Though end of loadshedding for the industrial sectors for a few days was a good omen but energy demand would be increased in near future, he added.
He lamented that annually 35 million acre feet water is being wasted to the sea despite the fact that this water could be used for irrigation and generation of cheap hydel power. He said that keeping in view the ongoing scenario, the large dams are necessary, not only for storage of surface water, which is major component for agriculture, but also for generation of hydroelectricity, which is the cheapest and cleanest form of energy.
