LG teases its quad HD G4 smartphone with 5.5-inch screen ahead of April 24 launch

SEOUL: LG has teased its upcoming G4 smartphone, it’s bragging about some of its visual prowess ahead of an April 24 unveiling.

The South Korean company says it’s already mass-producing a display with a 1,440 x 2,550 resolution, also known as “quad HD.” It boasts 538 pixels per inch, an impressive number for a 5.5-inch screen. LG didn’t specify the G4 by name, but a “forthcoming flagship smartphone to be unveiled at the end of the month” doesn’t require much speculation.

LG is also touting what it calls Advanced In-Cell Touch (AIT) technology, which allows the screen to sense touches even if the display is wet.

Additionally, LG says its display has a contrast ratio that’s 50 percent higher than other displays, and that it’s 30 percent brighter than the competition, but without burning up any additional energy.

Why this matters: Specs are always a great way to understand the march of technology, but it’s the intangibles of using a device that tell the whole story. The G3 was a rather solid phone, which smartly put the buttons on the back to make it easier to hold than the iPhone 6 Plus, even though they share the 5.5-inch screen size. However, the Galaxy S6 impressed us so much with its excellent screen and camera that LG will really need to knock it out of the park to win us over.
