LHC adjourns hearing of case regarding extra sales tax on petroleum products

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) has summoned the counsels from both parties for final arguments in case of extra sales tax on petroleum products. The LHC also adjourned the hearing of the case until the next four weeks.

Justice Aisha A Malik hear the case where counsel for the petitioner, Shiraz Zaka, submitted that the federal government could not impose sales tax on petroleum products without getting approval from parliament, as per Article 77 of the Constitution.

However, extra sales tax is being charged on petroleum products by the federal government illegally without seeking approval from parliament, he added.

The appellant appealed the LHC to order the government to stop the extra sales tax collection on the petroleum products because extra collection of sales tax is burden on general public.

He said despite fall in prices of the petroleum products in the international market, the government fail to provide relief to the people. He prayed, court may null and void extra sales tax on petroleum products.

After hearing arguments from the appellant side Lahore High Court (LHC) called the counsels from both parties for the final arguments. Court also adjourns hearing of case for four weeks, on said date Justice Aisha A Malik will hear the case on same date.
