LAHORE: Justice Shahid Kareem of the Lahore High Court (LHC) has declared tax notice of Rs 407 million issued by tax authorities as null and void and directed Appellate Tribunal Inland Revenue (ATIR) to decide the appeals filed by M/s Ittefaq Sugar Mills and Kashmir Sugar Mills within 60 days.

The court also restricted the tax authorities from taking any action against Mian Tariq Shafee, a close relative of the prime minister. In his plea, the petitioner Mian Tariq Shafee prayed to the court that the FBR issued him sales tax notice on sugar which is stocked in his godowns from year 2011. He also argued that the FBR did not provide him enough opportunity to clarify his position. He said that the FBR is not authorised to issue tax notice without estimating the actual cost.
