HONG KONG: Final preparations being made to send two beams of high-energy particles racing through 16 miles of circular underground tunnels that form Large Hadron Collider.
Scientists expect to restart the world’s biggest and most powerful atom smasher this weekend, potentially opening up a new era in physics.
A spokesman confirmed final preparations were being made to send two beams of high-energy particles racing through the 27 kilometres (16.7 miles) of circular underground tunnels that form the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).
Arnaud Marsollier, from Cern, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research in Geneva, said: “We don’t know exactly, but if everything goes well we should be ready by Saturday or Sunday. If we’re ready, we will make it happen.”
