PESHAWAR: The local political parties have demanded the federal government to extend the local government system to the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) for ensuring uniform development at the union council level.

The leaders of Fata Siasi Ittehad, a political alliance of local parties, have rejected the reforms committee constituted by Governor Sardar Mahtab Ahmad Khan and presented their demands for reforms in the tribal area in a press conference.

The President of the alliance and PPP co-chairperson’s adviser for Fata, Akhunzada Chattan, alleged that the governor was not sincere in reforms in the system of Fata otherwise he would have given representation to the stakeholders of different tribal regions.

Chattan was flanked by other office-bearers of the political alliance, including its senior Vice-President (VP) Zahir Shah Safi from QWP, VP Said Wali Shah from PML-N, VP Aftab Khan from PML-Q, Zar Noor Afridi deputy general secretary from JI, Nisar Khan from ANP and Mufti Ainuddin finance secretary from JUI-F. He said that the seat of coordination secretary had been reserved for PTI while Abdul Latif Afridi advocate was the patron-in-chief of the alliance.

Expressing concern over the loss of lives and properties and destruction of infrastructure as a result of terrorism and military operations, Chattan demanded of the government to announce a special development package of Rs1 billion to protect people from starvation and compensate the affected business community.
