The new policy continues the port’s sponsorship of local groups for community functions to inform residents about the port, but with more emphasis on funding groups that make Long Beach a better place to live and work, a release said.

Groups now will be asked to submit their requests during two periods every year. The first is Sept. 1 through Oct. 2 this year, and the next one will be March 2016.

“As we inform and educate the community about the port, the city’s greatest economic engine, we have a responsibility to do that in a way that is transparent and consistent,” Harbor Commission President Lori Ann Guzmán said in a statement. “This is an opportunity to better partner with many great organizations in Long Beach that serve communities surrounding the port.”

The scheduled sponsorships give stakeholders a clear process to follow and help in their planning. The times also provides a way for the port to evaluate where its funding has the greatest impact, a release said.
