LONDON: Naturally long and curly eyelashes are considered as a sign of beauty in numerous cultures. However, a recent study proposes that long eyelashes also protect eyes from numerous bacteria and dryness.
Recently, a researcher at Georgia Institute of Technology along with other biochemists carried out a study on eyelashes.
According to the report printed in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface, biologists assessed eye lashes of 22 different animals. All these species were preserved at the American Museum of Natural History.
The outcome of the research showed that length of an ordinary eyelash is nearly one-third of the width of eye. It is a perfect length that is required to avert air and germ from eyes.
Later on, scientist formed an artificial eye with long lashes and placed it near a wind tunnel. They carried out the experiment for the verification of study. The test result evidently supported the conclusion of previous analysis
Earlier, all the studies only pointed out a single purpose of eyelashes: protection from dust. In comparison, the latest research demonstrates that eyelashes work like sensor for blinking. The process of blinking keeps eyes wet.
Steven Vogel, a professor emeritus at Duke, called study a “tremendous research”. He states that the research reveals accurate purpose and function of eyelashes.
