NEW YORK: The Verssed W1 is an R899 Windows Phone 8.1 handset, featuring a quad-core Snapdragon 200 processor, 512MBs of RAM, 4GBs of storage and a 4-inch 800×480 display – in other words, it’s roughly on the same level as the Lumia 530.
As for the camera department, the Verssed W1 has a 5MP main camera and a VGA front-facing shooter. Other specifications include a 1420mAh battery, Qualcomm’s QuickCharge technology (for quick charging, what a surprise!) and dual-SIM capabilities. The device will be sold at Edgars, CNA and other stores in the Edcon Group, with a launch date set for December 15.
In a cool move, Microsoft South Africa also confirmed that the Verssed W1 would be eligible for the Windows Phone 10 update too. Edcon and Microsoft SA had a demo unit on hand for us to play with, and as we expected from the platform, it was a pretty smooth experience.
The camera application wasn’t functional though, which wasn’t unexpected due to the unreleased nature of the handset. But everything else seemed to be rather slick, such as the Windows Phone homescreen, scrolling and app launching. Of course, the platform does have minimum hardware requirements to ensure a smooth experience for the most part. The hardware itself wasn’t anything to write home about, but it felt like it would survive a drop or two.
