BRUSSELS: European Union lawmakers have agreed to set up a special committee to look into national tax rules following the Luxembourg leaks revelations about sweet deals for big companies.

The committee of lawmakers from the European Parliament will examine the Luxleaks case and other incidents of tax avoidance and evasion around Europe.

The decision to set up the committee was taken Thursday by leaders of the parliament’s political groups and goes to a full vote next week.

The committee will be similar to one set up to probe prisoner rendition allegations against the CIA and will have the power to propose legislation to address any issues it uncovers.

The EU has pledged to crack down on tax rulings favoring big firms. It launched an inquiry Tuesday into Belgium’s tax laws.
