KANGAR: Two Customs officers who allegedly sought RM3,000 as bribes from a fishing boat owner were picked up by the Perlis Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in Kuala Perlis, Monday.
Its director, Yaakob Angah said a man was also detained at his home in Kuala Perlis for suspicion of collaborating with the two customs officers Tuesday.
He said the Customs officers, in their 40s, were charged with soliciting RM4,000 as an inducement to not take action against the boat owner who was transporting diesel believed to have been smuggled to a neighbouring country three days ago.
“However, the MACC team found only RM3,000 from the officers when they were raided yesterday afternoon,” said Yaakob in a press statement.
He said the two Customs officers would be remanded for four days from Tuesday to assist in investigations under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009.
The man who collaborated with them was being investigated under Section 28 of the same Act.
Yaakob said the MACC would complete investigations before submitting it to the Deputy Public Prosecutor for further action.
