Made in China drugs smuggled into Malaysia via handbags and courier services

KUALA LUMPUR: Police detained 14 individuals including 10 foreigners in five raids in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Johor here the other day.

Federal Narcotics Department director Datuk Seri Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff said the foreigners, aged between 26 and 44, were from Indonesia, Thailand, Nigeria and Vietnam. Mokhtar said, during these raids, police seized a total of 16.4kg of various drugs worth RM2.3 million and also confiscated various items such as watches, cash and seven cars which worth RM778,000.

“The drug syndicates were using courier services and cargo to transport their goods. The drugs then were placed in handbags. We believe that the drugs were derived from China and meant to be distributed to the international and local market,” he told a press conference at the Bukit Aman Federal police headquarters here today.

Federal Narcotics Department director Datuk Seri Mohd Mokhtar Shariff (left) showing drugs and items seized from several raids in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Johor.YAZIT RAZALI Mokhtar said during the first raid last Friday, police raided a house at Taman Perindustrian Tasik Perdana in Puchong and seized drugs worth RM150,000. “On Sunday, the STING team carried out three raids in Casa Residency here and Ampang. “The team detained two Indonesian men aged between 30 and 40, seized 0.9kg of drugs worth RM135,000,” he said adding that the team also confiscated cash worth RM102,600 and two cars. Mokhtar said the third raid was conducted on Monday, where team had checked a security guard post at a courier company in Chan Siow Lin, Sungai Besi.

“We detained two women from Thailand and a woman from Indonesia, aged between 26 and 40. A total of 0.3kg of drugs worth RM45,000 was seized. “For the fourth raid, the STING team struck the Pelangi Square Trading Centre and Sunway Damansara, Petaling Jaya. From the raid, police arrested two Nigerian men, a woman from Nigeria and another woman from Indonesia,” he said. That raid yielded 3.2kg of drugs worth RM480,000. “The last raid was conducted in Johor on Wednesday where the team struck Taman Bayu Puteri, Taman Century, Bandar Baru Permas Jaya and Taman Pelangi. “From the various raids, the team nabbed four men (all Malaysians) and a Vietnamese woman aged between 30 and 54. The team also confiscated various drugs weighing about 10.6kg worth RM1.5 million.

“Police also seized cash worth RM14,408, watches and seven cars with an overall value of RM531,000,” he added. Mokhtar said that as of Jan 1 until Apr 3, a total of 55,049 individuals have been detained under drug-related offences, with drugs seizure amounting about 2,000kg worth RM61.4 million.
