KARACHI: Pakistan has taken another step towards strengthening its energy security after a major gas discovery was made in Sindh, with the newly discovered Lundali-1 well already connected to the Sui Southern gas supply network.
According to the Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDC), the discovery marks the first successful gas find from the Lundali-1 well in the Sukhpur Block.
According to a letter sent by OGDC to the Pakistan Stock Exchange, the Lundali-1 well is currently producing 10 million standard cubic feet of gas per day (MMscfd).
The well has recorded gas pressure of 2,000 pounds per square inch (psi), while the newly discovered gas has been connected to the Sui Southern supply network.
The development marks an important milestone for Pakistan’s domestic energy sector as the country continues to face challenges in meeting its gas requirements.
Joint venture behind gas discovery
The Lundali-1 discovery was made through a joint venture involving OGDC, Mari Energies, Turk Petroleum and Prime Global.
OGDC and Mari Energies each hold a 30% stake in the well. Prime Global holds 25%, while Turk Petroleum has a 15% share.
The participation of Pakistani and Turkish companies in the project also marks an important milestone for the joint venture behind the exploration activity.
Energy experts believe the discovery could help reduce the gap between Pakistan’s gas demand and supply.
The addition of locally produced gas to the Sui Southern network could provide further support to the country’s energy supply and reduce some pressure arising from the existing shortfall.
The discovery is also significant because it strengthens prospects for additional exploration in the area.
More gas reserves may be found
Experts said the successful discovery from Lundali-1 has raised the possibility of finding additional gas reserves in the Sukhpur Block.
The latest find could therefore encourage further exploration and development activity in the block, potentially leading to additional domestic gas resources.
For Pakistan, new indigenous gas discoveries are particularly important as the country seeks to improve energy security and bridge the gap between domestic gas demand and available supply.
OGDC reports discovery to PSX
OGDC formally communicated the development through a letter to the Pakistan Stock Exchange, confirming the production and pressure figures from the Lundali-1 well.
The company said the well is producing 10 MMscfd of gas at a pressure of 2,000 psi and has been connected to the Sui Southern supply network.
