AMMAN: The net profit of the major telecommunication companies in Jordan (Zain Jordan, Orange Jordan, Umniah) amounted to JOD25.3 million in the first quarter of this year.
This represents a drop of 24.3 per cent compared with the same period of 2014, reports Jordan-based Alrai newspaper. Sector data shows that the total revenues of these companies in the first quarter of this year have reached JOD195.8m, down by 4.1 per cent compared with the same period last year.
For his part, Raslan Deiranieh, deputy chief executive officer at Orange Jordan, says: “The financial results for the first quarter of the major telecom companies (Zain Jordan, Orange Jordan, Umniah) indicate that the decline trend is ongoing.”
Deiranieh adds that the doubling of the tax rate on cellular from 12 per cent to 24 per cent is the main reason for this decline, in addition to the 150 per cent rise in electricity prices.
