KUALA KEDAH: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency’s foiled an attempt to smuggle illicit cigarettes from Langkawi to Kuala Kedah. Langkawi Maritime District 1 Chief Maritime Enforcer First Admiral Zulkarnain Mohd Omar said officers from its Kuala Kedah base, acting on a tip-off, had positioned itself at a location where the smuggling was believed to be taking place. “At 3.50pm, the patrol boat detected an unregistered blue wooden boat about 2.4 nautical miles away from the shores of Kuala Kuar, headed towards Kuala Kedah. “We apprehended the boat at 4pm. Further checks found two teenagers, aged 16 and 15, believed to be from Myanmar with no valid identification documents on them‎, on the boat. “We also found some 350 cartons of cigarettes, which we believe they were trying to smuggle from Langkawi to Kuala Kedah,” he said, adding that the boat was subsequently escorted to the maritime base here for further investigations.
