KUALA LUMPUR: The Customs Senior Officers Association (PERKASA) has condemned the action of the anti-GST group that barged into the Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) Complex in Kelana Jaya to protest against the implementation of GST on April 1.
Its president, Mohd Noor Yusoff said this was because GST was a national agenda and JKDM was just fulfilling the trust and responsibility placed upon it to implement the taxation system to replace the Sales and Services Tax used since the 1970s. “The aim of the group on March 23 was to ensure the failure of the implementation of GST on April 1. I believe they understand GST is a national agenda and not JKDM’s.”
“We regard this as a challenge and it boosts our spirit, and I believe the 3,000 senior customs officers aided by 13,000 personnel are capable of shouldering the responsibility entrusted to us,” he told a media conference here, yesterday.
He said JKDM was ready to spend time for anybody who wanted to get accurate information on the mechanism of implementing the GST.
He said PERKASA viewed seriously the action of certain quarters who tried to twist facts or the ceramah of its members and disseminating them unprofessionally, and if necessary, would take legal action.
“PERKASA appeals to the quarters concerned not to waste time with provocations and it is better if they can gather in a hall or stadium and call JKDM to explain the GST,” he said.
Mohd Noor said JKDM would continue to play its role in giving effective explanations to all ‘registrants’ via ‘hand holding’ programmes which would be conducted proactively until all registrants understood the GST concept.
