KANGAR: The Kangar Special Corruption Court imposed a six-month jail sentence and RM10,000 fine on an assistant superintendent of Customs over a fraudulent claim. Judicial commissioner Abu Bakar Katar passed the sentence on M.S. Lingeswaran, 39, of the Padang Besar Customs Narcotics Unit, after finding him guilty of the offence.
Lingeswaran was charged on May 6, 2005, with deceiving by submitting a receipt of the Kuala Perlis Seaview Hotel along with a claim for allowance of transfer from the Pengkalan Hulu Customs Office in Perak to Padang Besar. He had claimed for a five-day accommodation, from March 14 to 18, 2005, and other claims totalling RM5,000 when he had not stayed at the hotel. Lingeswaran, who was represented by counsel S. Sundarajan, was allowed a stay of execution and bail of RM6,000 in one surety pending appeal to the Court of Appeal. Putrajaya Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission prosecuting officer Saiful Hazmi Mohd Saad appeared for the prosecution.
