SEPANGGAR: The Customs Department seized 11 tonnes of firecrackers and fireworks nationwide over the last two months, said its director-general Datuk Seri Khazali Ahmad.
He said the department carried out raids early because fireworks and firecrackers posed a danger to people, especially children, during festive seasons. “Firecrackers and fireworks manufactured nowadays are so sophisticated that a special kind of expertise is needed.
We cannot take these high-risk explosives lightly. “During festive seasons, especially Hari Raya Aidilfitri, people should not waste their money on firecrackers or fireworks. The risks and dangers involved are high,” he said after a breaking-of-fast event with Sabah Customs personnel here last night. The event was graced by the Yang Dipertua Negeri’s wife, Toh Puan Norlidah R.M. Jasni.
