KUALA LUMPUR: Mamak stalls are not spared in the Customs Department crackdown on retailers selling smuggled cigarettes.
In Bangsar here, Customs officers found 43 cartons of contraband cigarettes at a roadside mamak stall in Jalan Lengkok Abdullah and arrested the 50-year-old owner.
Also in Bangsar, officers seized 20 cartons of illegal cigarettes from a mini-market in Jalan Kemuja and detained two workers.
In Perak, the officers arrested a 29-year-old man at a mini-market in Jalan Kampung Sitiawan, Taman Megah, after they found 15 cartons in the premises. They also seized 10 packs of the cigarettes from a sundry shop in Jalan Haji Mohammad Ali, Taman Intan.
In Johor, 42 packs of the contraband were found in a sundry shop in Jalan Pelanduk Taman Scientex, Pasir Gudang. One man was arrested.
In Penang, 35 cartons were seized from a roadside stall in Lebuh Macallum.
In Malacca, 22 packs were found in a sundry shop in Taman Sebang Mutiara, Alor Gajah.
Cigarette and liquor smuggling has caused the country to lose RM1.84bil in taxes yearly.
