KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will seek to extradite 20 year old man arrested in Pakistan for attempting to smuggle firearms and ammunition out of the country.

Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said police will apply for the extradition “as soon as possible” under the mutual legal assistance (MLA) arrangement between Malaysia and Pakistan.

Zahid, who is also home minister, said the request is to enable Malaysian police to investigate, charge and sentence the Kuching-born suspect, Al Muhd Alfie Kqhyriel, according to Malaysian laws.

Zahid thanked Pakistani authorities for the quick disclosure of the arrest and said Malaysia will not compromise on anyone, particularly its citizens, smuggling firearms. He said the police will continue to monitor the smuggling of firearms to other countries. Al Muhd was arrested at the Jinnah International Airport in Karachi on December 23 while he was about to board a Thai Airways flight bound for Malaysia via Bangkok. Pakistani airport security found four disassembled handguns, eight ammunition magazines and 70 bullets in a hidden compartment in his luggage and shoes
