PADANG BESAR: Two men believed to be part of cigarettes and liquor smuggling syndicate were foiled in their attempt to ram past the gate at the Malaysia-Thailand border here the other day.
The men, driving a Toyota Hilux four-wheel drive with Thai registration plates, were reportedly acting suspiciously prior to attempting to ram the border gate at about 3am, Friday.
The suspects escaped on foot, abandoning their vehicle, after the gate failed to come down.
Twenty black parcels containing cigarettes and three parcels containing liquor were found beside the gate. It is believed that the men were waiting for right time to smuggle the items into Thailand.
Malaysian and Thai police are investigating the incident.
