KUALA LUMPUR: Customs officers have foiled an attempt by a male Indian national to smuggle into Malaysia 5.05kg of ketamine valued at RM227,250, said KL International Airport Customs director Datuk Chik Omar Chik Lim.

He said the 46-year-old man, who had arrived from Chennai, India, was arrested at the KLIA arrival hall at about 9am on Aug 27 after a scan showed a suspicious-looking item in his luggage.

“An inspection of the bag found that it contained women’s clothes, scarves and four packets of food. On checking further, the Customs officers recovered two packets of white powder hidden in the inner lining of the bag,” he told a press conference at the KLIA Customs Complex here Monday. He said the content of the packets of food would be sent to the Chemistry Department for an analysis.

Chik Omar said an investigation showed that the suspect had visited Malaysia twice this year, the first time in July for a week.

The suspect was remanded for seven days and the remand period was extended by four days until Wednesday for an investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which carries the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.
