GEORGE TOWN: Police detained a husband and wife couple and seized 182 kilogrammes of cannabis worth about RM540,000 in two raids around Jelutong, here yesterday.
Acting on public tip-off and intelligence, the Bukit Aman Special Tactical Intelligence Narcotics Group (Sting) team, with the cooperation of the Penang narcotics department detained a man at the car park of a condominium in Jelutong, here at 12.30pm. A police source said the cannabis was found when checking the 37-year-old man who worked as a plumber and further investigations led Sting to raid the suspect’s condominium unit and arrested his 30-year-old wife.
“Police found nearly 8kg of cannabis hidden in a room of the house. The suspects then took police to a parking lot in a residential area near the condominium where 91kg of cannabis was hidden in a car that was parked there,” the source said here today. The source said in a follow up operation, police raided another house in Kampung Dodol, here, believed to have been used by the couple to store the drugs and found about 83kg of cannabis worth RM240,000.
“The couple who tested positive for drugs will be remanded to facilitate investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952,” the source said. Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar confirmed the arrests through his official Twitter. “Congratulations to Sting PDRMsia, detained two people and seized more than 182kg of ganja in Jelutong, Penang #GoPDRMgo,” he said.
