KUALA LUMPUR: Petronas Dagangan has launched the country’s first RON 97 fuel to meet the Euro 4M specification, ahead of the gazetted Sept 1, 2015 implementation date.

The company, which is Petroliam Nasional Bhd’s 69.9% owned domestic marketing arm, launched its new Petronas Primax 97 with the improved advanced energy formula, which it says is engineered for superior acceleration.

Petronas Dagangan said the fuel has lower benzene, sulphur and Reid Vapour Pressure (RVP) levels, making it a greener fuel as it produces less emissions and pollutants compared to the older Euro 2M RON 97 fuel.

With the Euro 4M specification, it said, the lower sulphur content would also further protect emission systems.

It said Petronas Primax 97 delivered superior acceleration with three key attributes, which are, improved drivability with the use of new chemistry, better protection for engines with lower suphur gasoline and better combustion technology.

It said the improved chemistry ensured better friction reduction at the vehicle’s cylinder wall and enhanced the function of the engine oil, allowing smoother acceleration.

The new formulation also further removed and prevented deposits, providing long-term protection to the engine’s fuel injector.

It added that better combustion was possible with the high quality base fuel produced by Petronas refineries, which was an optimised formulation developed via the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One Team partnership.

With the better combustion, Petronas Dagangan said motorists could enjoy longer, smoother drives with every tank of Petronas Primax 97.

The fuel was launched during an event on Wednesday by Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Hamzah Zainudin at the Technology Park Malaysia Petronas station.

Also present was Petronas executive vice president and chief executive officer of downstream business, Md Arif Mahmood.

“We are not only introducing a fuel that meets the gazetted requirement. We are also delivering to our customers an enhanced Petronas Primax 97 with improved advanced energy formula.

“With the improved formula, motorists will experience superior acceleration and ultimately an enhanced driving experience,” said Petronas Dagangan managing director and chief executive officer, Ibrahimnuddin Yunus.

Fuel technology from Petronas, it said, had fuelled the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One team to win the 2014 Formula One Constructors Championship and the team is currently leading the World Championship.

In the statement, the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One team driver Lewis Hamilton said Petronas Primax had propelled the team to victory.

“As Petronas Primax’ technical performance consultant, I am extremely honoured to be able to share this winning formula with Malaysian drivers today,” he said.

Petronas Dagangan said the technology has been transferred from the Formula One tracks to the everyday road to enable motorists to experience better acceleration.

Petronas Dagangan was the country’s first company to introduce unleaded gasoline in Aug 1990 and later in May 2009, it was the first to introduce the RON 95 fuel ahead of the government’s implementation date.

It is also a five-time consecutive Gold Award winner of the Putra Brand Awards for the Automotive – Fuel and Lubricants category.
