ISLAMABAD: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has arrested a man for threatening the bureau’s chief with consequences similar to ones faced by slain police officer Tahir Dawar.
The bureau has nabbed a man from Lahore who had dispatched an ‘unknown letter’ to the Chairman, Justice (r) Javed Iqbal threatening that he would face the same consequences as faced by Superintendent Police Tahir Dawar.
In the letter, the NAB chief was asked to withdraw the cases filed against former prime minister Nawaz Sharif otherwise he would meet the same fate as the police officer.
The bureau is expected to present the suspect before a magistrate today; the identity of the suspect has not been revealed.
Tahir Dawar was murdered last month in Afghanistan. His body was discovered from Nangarhar province after he disappeared from Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad. Tahir Dawar, who belonged to North Waziristan, was posted as the Rural SP in Peshawar a couple of months back.
Before that, he had served as Faqirabad DSP. He also served in the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and was posted at the Peshawar international airport for some time.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media wing of the military had condemned the brutal murder of SP Tahir Dawar in Afghanistan.
In a series of tweets, the Director General ISPR Major General Asif Ghafoor said: “Brutal murder of SP Tahir Khan Dawar in Afghanistan is highly condemnable. We have lost a brave police officer. His abduction, move to Afghanistan, murder and follow up behavior of Afghan authorities raise questions which indicate involvement or resources more than a terrorist organisation in Afghanistan.”
As many as three references had been filed against the former premier in line with the directives of the Supreme Court by the National Accountability Bureau.
The accountability court judge Muhammad Bashir had sentenced the elder Sharif to ten years in the Avenfield reference. However, the conviction was suspended by a two-member bench of the Islamabad High Court.
Besides Sharif, Maryam Nawaz was sentenced to 7 years and Captain Safdar was sentenced to one year in prison in the Avenfield reference which pertains to the pricey flats of the former ruling family.
