OTTAWA: Customs officers discovered 4.8 kilograms of heroin hidden in luggage on February 14th at Halifax Stanfield International Airport.
A 45-year-old man has been turned over to the RCMP after officers with the Canada Border Services Agency seized a large quantity of heroin at the Halifax Stanfield International Airport.
The CBSA says officers were conducting a routine examination at the airport last Sunday when they discovered the drugs.
“We use presumptive field tests, which includes technology called an ion scan, or an actual test called a narcotics identification kit, that allows us to get a positive for the substance,” explains Colin Murchison, chief of operations of CBSA at the airport.
The officers took apart a suitcase andfound a large package concealed within the liner. It turned out to be 4.8 kilograms of heroin.
“Heroin is not something that’s commonly encountered here in Atlantic Canada,” says Murchison. “This is the second seizure in the last five years, this one being 4.8 kilograms, and there was one also at the container exam facility in Halifax of five kilograms.”
