Mangla Dam filled to highest storage level of 1,242 feet

LAHORE: The Mangla Dam has filled to its highest storage level of 1242 feet, however, the project authorities strictly followed the criterion jointly devised by all stakeholders to fill the reservoir.

This year, Wapda has adopted the filling mechanism with special reference to the floods in the other Western rivers namely Chenab and Indus.

The raised mangla Dam also filled to its maximum level last year, providing about 2.88 million acre feet (MAF) of additional water for irrigation, which also helped generate 620 million additional units of low-cost hydel electricity during the last fiscal year. It is pertinent to mention that Mangla Dam was raised by 30 feet in December 2009 to increase water storage level of the reservoir upto 1242 feet above mean sea level. Thus, water storage capacity of the Mangla reservoir increased to 7.4 MAF from 4.6 MAF.
