NEW DELHI: Visakhapatnam has retained its status as a leading centre for seafood exports. It topped among 30 fish landing centres in the country by exporting consignments worth Rs.7,578.27 crore.
Marine product exports from Visakhapatnam went up by 11 per cent in terms of share in total quantity sent from the country and 22.66 per cent in value. Visakhapatnam was followed by Kochi (Rs.4,989 crore), JNPT (Rs.3,939 crore) and Kolkata (Rs.3,686 crore).
The growth rate of Visakhapatnam was 13.24 per cent in terms of quantity and 11.03 per cent in value compared to previous year.
Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), a statutory body under the Ministry of Commerce which is dedicated to promotion of exports, said in its report released here on Thursday that during 2014-15 the country earned an all-time high export turnover of Rs.33,441.61 crore – frozen shrimp alone accounting for 67.19 per cent of the total value.
MPEDA has set a target of US$ 6.6 billion for 2015-16 by promoting export of Vannamei, an exotic white shrimp, diversification of aquaculture species of Tilapia and mangrove crabs and value added products and improvement in quality.
