DENMARK: MarineTraffic, the world’s most trusted AIS vessel tracking service is supporting initiatives to help develop the next generation of Greek web entrepreneurs and programmers.

Demitris Memos, MarineTraffic’s Athens based managing director participated last weekend (29-31 May) as a mentor at ‘Startup Weekend Piraeus – Blue Growth, Shipping and Logistics’, helping teams of entrepreneurs and programmers to create and develop their business ideas. The event was held at the Piraeus Chamber, close to the offices of many prominent Greek shipping firms.

Commenting on the event, Memos said: “The startup weekend (SUP) is a valuable learning experience, and condenses the process of developing an idea into a business using a proven process and teamwork. The SUP and similar events are unique experiences for young people starting their entrepreneurial or professional careers. In Greece, the lack of stimulation and friction between successful startups is an obstacle and disadvantage for graduates who want to create and innovate. MarineTraffic will continue to support startup events and provide mentoring.”

Talking specifically about tech innovation within the shipping industry, Memos said: “Recently, the shipping industry has come closer to web based tech solutions, with several online applications used by shipping companies as part of their daily work. At MarineTraffic, we like to think we have made a helpful contribution in this area. Logistics companies tend to be most receptive to web based solutions as they are always searching for a high degree of efficiency and looking to improve process optimization”.
