BRENT: Younger diabetics are lacking access to medical care, compared to older people who suffer from the disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), said.

The figures in the report depict that there are around 19% of young American adults between the age group of 18 to 39, who have not visited a medical professional in the last six months. It was also found that all the patients in this group were less likely to have undergone a blood pressure or cholesterol check in the last 12 months as compared to the older people.

CDC officials reported, “Retinal [eye] damage and nerve damage to the feet are diabetes-related complications that contribute to major [illness] and disability among adults with diabetes”.

They added that regular visits to a physician can largely allow healthcare professionals a chance to spot such complications before they become serious.

Also, the study found that the use of insulin to help control the disease became more common with people only with age. Just 13.5% of seniors did not take any drugs to control their condition as against 28.8% of the youngest people who were considered in the study.
