The spacecraft was launched in August of 2004 and entered the orbit of Mercury in March of 2011. The mission was supposed to be for a year but it was extended for another year and then another.
The mission is designed to end with a collision, the craft colliding with planet Mercury.
The Messenger is set to collide with Mercury this Thursday, April 30. At a speed of more than 8,750 miles per hour, the spacecraft will soon run out of propellant and scientists are expecting the force of solar gravity to cause it to slam into the surface of Mercury.
