MEXICO CITY: Mexico exported 26,943 mt of rebar in March, 64.7% less than the 76,396 mt exported in March 2014, data released by the country’s Economy Secretariat showed.
The value of exported rebar plunged to $16.68 million FOB in March from $50.57 million FOB March 2014.
The reduction was mainly due to vanishing negotiations with the US, which imported only 599 mt in March, compared with 19,975 mt in March 2014. Since April last year, there have been 20.58%-66.7% antidumping margins on Mexican rebar in force imposed by the US Department of Commerce.
Exports to another key rebar commercial partner, Colombia, also plunged — to 12,075 mt from 28,322 mt year on year. Bolivia, which imported 13,335 mt in March 2014, had no imports in March 2015, while Haiti — an unusual buyer for Mexican rebar — raised purchases to 2,289 mt from zero in March 2014.
Despite usually importing insignificant volumes of rebar, Mexico brought 8,537 mt in March, worth 4.52 million CIF, supplied from China (4,820 mt) and the US (3,715 mt). This is more than the 6,019 mt of rebar imported in all of 2014.
