MEXICO CITY: In the period from January to July 2015 the value of food exports from Mexico to the European Union totalled 581.6 million euros, an increase of 22.6 per cent on the same period last year, the agriculture department SAGARPA has reported.
The exports were the highest ever for this period, and showed growth above the average annual growth for the period 2010-2014, which is around 9.6 per cent.
Alcoholic beverages, fruit, coffee, fruit and vegetable preparations, as well as vegetables, formed the main agri-food products exported from Mexico to the EU, with these five assets representing 62.4 per cent of the value of sales to that region.
During this period, exports of plants for animal feed reached 14,800 tons, after only 6300 was recorded in 2014.
The countries of the EU economic zone most noted for purchases of Mexican products include Belgium, Germany, Austria and Denmark, among others.
In recent days, representatives of leading enterprises in the agricultural sector in France, belonging to the Club Demeter, met in Mexico with officials from SAGARPA to strengthen trade ties.
Mexico also recorded a 25 per cent increase in total agricultural exports during August, compared to August 2014, according to Mexico’s National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI).
Between January and August, eight thousand shipments totalling 915.6 million dollars were recorded, 8.4 per cent more than the same period last year.
One of the most important annual increases was recorded in exports of frozen shrimp, with a rise of 120.6 per cent.
