NEW YORK: Microsoft is reportedly testing Skype for Web as invites have been rolling out to select users inviting them to try out the Skype for Web Beta. Currently Skype can only be used with an app on your computer, phone, or other devices.
Other communication tools like Google’s Hangouts already feature web extensions allowing them to be used through browsers, and this move by Microsoft will allow Skype users who are restricted from installing applications on their work or public computers to be able to use Skype through the web as well.
Unfortunately there currently seems to be no way to request an invite, and when you access the Skype for Web page without an invite sad emoji tells you it’s invite only. There is no word on a release date and the Skype for Web FAQ only states that Microsoft is “rolling out Skype for Web to a small group of existing and new users in selected countries and will gradually expand availability in the coming months.”
