SYDNEY: Microsoft has been working on a next generation internet browser. The name of the browser has not yet been decided but it is being creating under the codename of Project Spartan.
That’s right. Those crazy Australians can place bets on what Microsoft will call its next browser, currently codenamed Project Spartan, courtesy of Australian betting website Sportsbet.
“Internet Explorer really went places no browser had gone before but unfortunately it just kept going until it got well and truly lost so a reboot is much needed, all hail Spartan!” Sportsbet’s Will Byrne said in a statement sent to Mashable.
It seems most are expecting Microsoft to take the boring opting and go with ‘Spartan’, which is odds-on favourite at AU$7.50, closely followed by ‘Bing’ at $11 and ‘Windowscape’ at $16.
However, we have everything crossed that Microsoft goes with some of the more out-there suggestions from the betting website, which is offering ‘Browser Boss’ for $26, ‘Microhard’ for $51, and ‘Bill Gates II’ for $101.
Our personal favourite is ‘Dora the Internet Explorer’, which is currently being offered for $501. We’re hoping Satya Nadella is equally fond of this suggestion.
While Microsoft is gearing up to launch a new web browser, the firm said earlier this week that talk of Internet Explorer’s death has been largely exaggerated.
At Convergence 2015 in Atlanta, Chris Capossela, Microsoft’s chief marketing officer, confirmed that while the firm is “researching” a new brand name for Project Spartan, this does not mean Windows is abandoning its longstanding IE brand.
“We’ll continue to have Internet Explorer, but we’ll also have a new browser, which is codenamed Project Spartan. We have to name the thing,” he said.
Microsoft clarified that IE will continue to be supported on some versions of Windows 10 with a focus on business use.
“We will continue to make Internet Explorer available with Windows 10 for enterprises and other customers who require legacy browser support,” the spokesperson said.
