THE LALRU police booked a milkman who used to smuggle liquor from Chandigarh to Punjab by hiding liquor bottles in milk drums. Police recovered 85 bottles of liquor.
In another case, the Mubarikpur police recovered 365 boxes of liquor from a truck.
According to the Lalru police, they received a tip-off that accused Ramesh Kumar, a resident of Bair Majra village near Lalru town, is a milkman but he smuggles liquor in his milk drums.
A police party, led by Head Constable Mukesh Kumar, set up a naka near Jalalpur road and arrested the accused. The police party recovered 84 bottles of locally made liquor from the milk drums. Accused Ramesh confessed to his crime and told the police that he used to sell the liquor at a higher rate in the area after buying it at a cheaper rate from Chandigarh.
The police booked Ramesh under sections 61, 1 and 14 of the Excise Act at the Lalru police station on the complaint of Head Constable Mukesh Kumar.
In another case, the Mubarikpur police recovered 365 boxes of liquor from a truck. The truck driver, Charanjeet Singh, was arrested and remanded in three-day police custody.
Mubarikpur police post in-charge Assistant Sub-Inspector Narpinder Singh said that they received a tip-off that the accused truck driver was smuggling the liquor from Chandigarh to Haryana. The police officers said that they were yet to find out whether any other person was involved in smuggling with Charanjeet.
“We set up a naka after getting the tip-off. On checking, we recovered the liquor and arrested the driver. The recovered liquor could be sold in
Chandigarh only. The accused told us that he was carrying the liquor to Haryana to sell it at a higher rate,” ASI Narpinder Singh said.
