TOKYO: Mitsubishi’s newly restyled Outlander SUV is expected to make its global debut in the coming weeks, which has been given an unscheduled unveiling this week.

Much of the updated SUV’s styling is inspired by last year’s Concept S PHEV show-car, debuted a sharp makeover for the big family car.

A number of key differences appear on the production model, however, with the Concept S PHEV’s dramatic tail-lights replaced with a pair of smaller units connected by an arched chrome garnish across the tailgate.

Although smaller than the concept’s extravagant design, the new lamps are nonetheless larger than those of the current Outlander, while also replacing the transparent lenses with a more traditional deep red look.

A glimpse of the front end, obscured in these shots, also reveals new headlights and a heavy chrome garnish, both clearly inspired by – although not identical to – the Concept S PHEV’s face.

New bumpers feature at both ends, and the doors also now feature a new bump panel along the lower edge that also works to reduce the slab-sided look of the Outlander’s profile.

The updated Outlander will make its first appearance at April’s New York Auto Show, and an Australian launch will occur around the same time.
