NEW YORK: Mitsubishi has made a debut of its newly updated Outlander SUV in New York, just weeks out from its Australian launch.
For 2015, the Outlander debuts the first production form of Mitsubishi’s new styling language, first previewed with a trio of SUV concepts at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show.
Buyers were given their first hint of a major facelift for the Outlander, however, with the unveiling late last year of the Concept S PHEV, a significantly overhauled version of the current model.
Much of the concept’s styling has carried over to the newly updated Outlander revealed today, although Mitsubishi has toned down the show car’s more ostentatious elements.
The refreshed SUV’s standout styling change lies up front, gaining sharp new headlights, a revised dual-louvre grille and big new chrome garnishes that form the basis of the carmaker’s new family look.
At the rear, the Concept S PHEV’s dramatic tail-lights have been replaced with a pair of smaller units connected by an arched chrome garnish across the tailgate.
Although smaller than the concept’s extravagant design, the new lamps are nonetheless larger than those of the current Outlander, while also replacing the transparent lenses with a more traditional deep red look.
In the cabin, there’s a new and more premium range of seat and trim materials, and Mitsubishi has also introduced a redesigned steering wheel and updated infotainment system.
Mitsubishi says the Outlander’s updates go well beyond styling and interior trim, confirming more than 100 changes above and below the surface.
Improved driving performance is promised, with re-tuned handling and a revised drive system a key focus.
A new-generation CVT automatic transmission is also on-board, with Mitsubishi promising improved acceleration, shift feel and torque delivery.
New sound-deadening materials have also been added throughout the cabin, along with a new noise-isolating glass for the windscreen and rear door glass. Improved weather stripping and engine bay trim has also been added.
Powertrain options remain unchanged for the new model year, which, for Australia, means 2.4 litre petrol, 2.2 litre diesel and 2.0 litre petrol-electric PHEV options.
The updated Outlander arrives in Australia later this month, with local pricing and details to be confirmed closer to launch.
