Mitsubishi teases its 2016 Outlander ahead of New York Auto Show

TOKYO: Mitsubishi has showed off a teaser image of the front of the facelifted crossover, which is also set to gain the long-awaited plug-in hybrid variant for the U.S. The front end is inspired by recent concepts like the XR-PHEV and GC-PHEV, and the Outlander PHEV Concept-S.

Launched in 2013, the current Outlander is an inexpensive three-row crossover, but it really felt like a throwback to 1998 in terms of interior quality, which is a bad thing especially in a $35,000 car competing in a tough class. Mitsubishi made some suspension and material changes for 2015, but more modifications are expected for this facelifted 2016 model.

The long-delayed Outlander PHEV has been previously reported to be in U.S. showrooms by April 2016, and even though it loses that third-row seat, it does give the Outlander a unique selling point among mainstream crossovers.
