OTTAWA : Canada should increase its efforts to improve a wobbly bilateral relationship with India, say business leaders, as the world’s most populous country becomes an increasingly “inevitable” economic partner.
Indian prime minister Narendra Modi was re-elected at the end of May with a sweeping majority, and although business ties have remained steady, the five-year term for his “pro-growth government” could offer new stability to Canadian firms, according to Goldy Hyder, president of the Business Council of Canada.
“He’s indicated that there’s going to be transformative change and opportunities in India, particularly related to energy and financial services and infrastructure, all of which are great strengths of Canada,” Hyder said in an interview Friday. “And no matter who’s in power or what construct they’re in, we can’t afford to be on the outside looking into India.”
