KARACHI: Mondelez Pakistan has announced a significant step towards sustainability by partnering with Shams Power to solarize its confectionary and powdered beverages plants.

This initiative, aimed at enhancing environmental sustainability and reducing carbon emissions, will increase the installed solar capacity at both sites to approximately 2.2 MW.

Under the terms of the agreement, Shams Power will install the solar equipment, manage the operation and maintenance of the systems, and eventually transfer the equipment to Mondelez Pakistan upon the completion of the term. This strategic move is expected to contribute around 3.3 million units of clean energy annually to Mondelez’s electricity mix, effectively offsetting approximately 1,500 tons of carbon emissions each year. To put this in perspective, the reduction in emissions is equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of about 1,000 households.

Sami Wahid, Managing Director of Mondelez Pakistan, expressed the company’s commitment to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives. “ESG and environment initiatives are at the top of our priorities. We take pride in the fact that happiness is at the core of all our products, and we wish to extend that spirit into all our operations. We stand strong with a happier, healthier planet and will ensure all steps necessary towards building a progressive community inside and around Mondelez,” Wahid stated.

Omar Malik, CEO of Shams Power, highlighted the importance of integrating alternate energy solutions into business operations. He expressed his excitement about the partnership with Mondelez, saying, “We at Shams Power are excited to extend our partnership with Mondelez Pakistan and are thankful to their leadership and management team for their vision and commitment towards green energy. This collaboration significantly contributes to mitigating climate change. We look forward to expanding this relationship and exploring additional sustainability initiatives together.”

Through this collaboration with Shams Power, Mondelez Pakistan aims to further reduce its carbon footprint, lower energy costs, and promote sustainability. The adoption of renewable energy sources aligns the company with global efforts to combat climate change and supports environmental conservation. This initiative is a testament to Mondelez’s dedication to corporate social responsibility and sustainable business practices.

By harnessing solar power, Mondelez Pakistan is not only reducing its operational impact on the environment but also setting an example for the industry. This proactive approach demonstrates the company’s leadership in sustainability and its commitment to a greener future.
