PANAJI: In the traffic performance profile for the month of December 2016, the Mormugao Port Trust has surpassed the target of 15.35 million tonnes set by the Ministry of Shipping, registering an increase of 35%.
According to the statement from the MPT, during the month of December, 2016, port handled a traffic of 3.94 million tonnes compared to 2.41 million tonnes handled during the month of December, 2015. An increase of 63.49 traffic during the month mainly consisted of 0.88 million tonnes of coal/coke, 0.09 million tonnes of petroleum products and other liquid cargo, 2.46 million tonnes Iron Ore.
The remaining traffic consisted of cargoes like Containerized cargo, H. R. Steel Coils, Granite, Lime Stone, wood chips etc. The general cargo traffic was 1.40 million tonnes. Gross tonnage of 43917 tonnes (in 3351 TEUs) of containerized cargo was also handled at the port during the month.
During the financial year 2015-16 the port handled traffic of 20.78 million tonnes thereby registering remarkable 41% growth. In the process MPT has recorded the highest growth rate on a year to year basis, among all the 12 Major Ports in India. The Port has also surpassed the target of 15.35 million tonnes set by the Ministry of Shipping, registering an increase of 35%. The traffic during the year consisted of 3.57 million tonnes of iron ore exports, 12.27 million tonnes of coal/coke and 1.06 million tonnes of petroleum products and other liquid cargo.
The remaining traffic consisted of cargo like Fertilizer, Bauxite, Alumina, Containerized cargo, H. R. Steel Coils, Steel slabs, Sugar, Granite, wood chips, pig iron, Nickel, Lime stone, bentonite etc. The general cargo traffic was 15.75 million tonnes. Gross tonnage of 3,45,426 tonnes (in 25539 TEUs) of containerized cargo was also handled at the port during the period.
